Like Dimdim, Yugma has evolved quickly in only a handful of years to become an innovative and progressive force in web conferencing. Incorporating various Web 2.0 devices and services like customizable widgets and full Skype integration, Yugma has the potential to give programs like Connect Pro, GoToMeeting and WebEx a run for their money. For now, though, with some of the kinks still being worked out and new features being developed, Yugma might still be a few years away from serious contention.

Conferencing Features:   Excellent

In addition to free teleconferencing and Skype integration, Yugma offers full functionality for multiple platforms and browsers, allowing Windows, Mac and Linux users to share desktops, record and playback meetings, conduct whiteboard sessions, share mouse and keyboard tools and advanced scheduling tools for larger meetings, presentations and webinars. While audio and chat features are well-developed and easily-integrated, Yugma still lacks true video/web cam functionality.

Audio/Video Features:   Excellent

Yugma’s fully Skype integration is appealing feature, allowing Skype account holders to instantly access and utilize their VoIP accounts directly through the program. Also, contact lists and can be accessed instantly, reducing the pre-meeting set-up process and allowing for ad hoc or improvised meetings.

Yugma doesn’t offer webcam functionality, which in other programs like Connect Pro and WebEx provide a personal touch and improve the quality of meetings, presentations and demonstrations and improve the quality of whiteboard sessions and interactive collaborations.

Security Features:   Excellent

In addition to full 128-bit AES end-to-end encryption for all data communication, e-commerce and authentication-related information transactions, client downloads of Yugma are certified by Verisign protecting both clients and meeting content from potential malicious use. Though Adobe Flash, arguably, has better security features than JavaScript, which Yugma uses, the architecture of its server makes data accessible only from the central Yugma server itself, which is further enforced through multiple layers of institutional, hardware and software protection.

Help/Support:   Excellent

Yugma provides several options for technical assistance and user resources. In addition to training modules that highlight tools, features and explains the ins and outs of their use, Yugma hosts a detailed FAQ page, PDF reference guides, moderated forums and a service status tracker to give users oversight over the status of their issue.

Yugma also lists email and telephone information for assistance and inquiries.

Summary:

Yugma is off to an excellent start, managing to incorporate emerging, cost-effective technologies into an easy to use, intuitive program. However, lacking built-in video file format compatibility for common video file formats like WMV and other, as well as web cam functionality for true video conferencing, hinder collaborative efforts and depersonalize presentations and demonstrations. Though Yugma has discussed plans of expanding its functionality to include video conferencing, users seeking built-in video conferencing functionality would be better suited for programs like Adobe Connect Pro.
